By the end of 1944, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg had suffered relatively limited war damage, although the Ardennes offensive in December caused severe destruction, especially in the north.
The Luxembourg government requested Allied assistance with reconstruction and agriculture.
The request was approved in September 1945, and Luxembourg received about 5,000 German prisoners from U.S. custody for labour duties.
Prisoners from the main camp at Mutfort were assigned to smaller work camps across the country.
German POW camps included:
Consdorf
Ettelbrück
Echternach
Esch sur Alzette
Hosingen
Haut Martelange
St. Esprit
Schrassing
Walferdingen
Wiltz
